The Lamb of God

As described in the museum's catalog, the Lamb in the second fragment stands on a height from which flow the four rivers of Paradise. Above its head is the chi-rho symbol that shows the lamb represents Jesus Christ. The red letters on the three fragments record the names of the apostles, who are also represented as lambs.

The inscription on the first fragment has these names: PAULUS IACOUS TADEUS SIMON TOMAS MATTEUS.

On the second piece the inscription is ECCE AGNUS [DE]I QUI TOLLIT [PE]CATUM SECULI, "Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).

The third piece has these names: petrus andreas iacovus ioannis filippus bartolomius.
